Diagrams
In general, we are visual creatures. To completely understand something, most people need a visual represtation of the idea being pondered. A complex, multi-part idea can sometimes be skillfully expressed with a few graphic elements. More importantly, the imagery (geometric or organic shapes, icons, and lines) allows the viewer to relate quicker and better understand the concept that is being presented.
